Hospitality and Hospitals

It’s the maddest of days for both hospitality and hospitals, and we’ve crossed the bridge from one to the other many times over this last year. Which got us thinking. Where does one end and the other begin? And how come the two words share such distinctive roots?

Hospitals, it could be argued, are examples of enforced hospitality, while the service provided by the hospitality industry is more discretionary.

But there’s more to it than that. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates famously said “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food,” and this message is repeated by doctors and nurses every day, whether they’re aware of it or not. The symbol “Rx” is the common abbreviation used by medical professionals to indicate prescriptions, and it’s derived from the Latin word for “recipe”.

The role of those of us in hospitality is to look after those people who choose to sleep or dine under our roofs. We do this by ensuring their wellbeing, and as we’re not medically qualified the only way we can look after them is by attending to their dietary needs.

At Taste Tibet this is why we do what we do. When you come for our food – for our hospitality – our aim is to leave you nourished and with a sense of wellbeing. Our food, always made from scratch, is naturally packed with stuff that is good for you – vegetables, spices, aromatics etc. We try to source the best ingredients possible, whilst ensuring that we remain as affordable and inclusive as we can. We never want to sell out, not because there’s ££ in the last bowl served, but because we hate to send anyone home unfed and without the customer care that they’ve come in for.

Please visit us this weekend in Magdalen Road for some nourishment and cheer. We are open on Friday and Saturday evening, 5-9pm, and Valentine’s Day can always come early, surely. You can order ahead from 4pm on the day (01865 499318) or just drop by.

Otherwise we are ,delivering again this Thursday. Click ,here to visit out ,online shop and order all the good stuff for reheating at home. We had a lot of fun with our mystery gift last week so we are offering this again to everyone who ,orders online and quotes MEN-KHANG (“hospital”) at the checkout. Don’t say we don’t nourish you…

Finally, as ever, another reminder of our ongoing free meals project that we operate in conjunction with  Oxford Mutual Aid. Massive thanks to everyone who donates towards this. Taste Tibet gets food parcels out to vulnerable families in Oxford every week and it’s you that makes this happen! You can contribute through our website, whether you’re ordering food or not. Thank you so much – you are amazing.
