Lunch With A View

Happy new year, everyone!

Taste Tibet is reopening TODAY, Wednesday, after a short Christmas break. Hopefully you have missed us a lot and will come and wallow away any January blues in our cosy resto very soon.

We are just back from a week in the Alps, where we got Chef on real skis for the first time in his life. I say real because he fashioned plenty of makeshift skis during the off-season as a child in Tibet. “I know snow,” he kept saying, and we should have believed him, as it turns out he is the fastest learner skier of all time (the adults six foot and above category, for sure). By day 4 our big guy was whizzing down couloirs like the mountains were his playground (wait a minute….).

This is just as well, since the lunches with the best views are the ones highest up the pistes. The first few days we left him on the magic carpet in the snow garden, where he ate nothing at all: he just spent all day travelling up and down that conveyor belt until he could ski almost parallel (no one who knows this man will be surprised by his determination).

Getting Yeshi up a chair lift and into a restaurant was a great moment. Finally we could share rösti + a crisp salad (a cool, pale beer may also have been consumed).

But in cold weather – and it was -10°C out there – our chef usually prefers warm, soupy foods. Is there a gap on the mountainside for Yeshi’s dal and a Taste Tibet chicken curry? If so I fear Oxford may lose its premier Tibetan chef.

It’s always hard to get back into work after the kind of holiday that takes you far away from your normal, especially when it’s been a while since you’ve had a proper break. We don’t get away during summer, so in our case it’s been ages.

We’ve returned to a broken van (again) and an empty restaurant fridge, but we’re cranking up up the heating and can’t wait to welcome you all in again. Remember: during a big freeze it’s important to eat warm. We have all the goods and we’re ready to treat you right.

The restaurant reopens TONIGHT and this week’s menu runs right through until Sunday evening. We’ve got a couple very special Tibetan dishes on the board for our first week back. Come and devour!

Taste Tibet is open all the usual hours this week, as follows:

Weds – Fri: 5-9.30pm (dinner only)
Saturday: 12-3/ 5-9.30pm
Sunday: 12-3 / 5-9pm

The menu is up on the website – check it. Come by for dine in, take away and a fresh raid on our our freezers. Chilli oil and hot mooli pickle are also in stock at the restaurant, in case Christmas wiped you out.

Newsletter subscribers get all the deals as usual this week. Have you signed up? Click here to receive weekly news and offers direct to your inbox.

Can’t wait to have everyone in again!

See you soon,

Julie and Yeshi
