Modern Life Is Rubbish

One of the many striking things about our recent visit to Tibet was just how much daily life has changed in the 25 years since Yeshi left home.

There’s lots of good news. For one thing, treks up and down the mountain are much quicker now. When Yeshi was living a nomadic life inside Tibet he used to walk for days to and from his home in the village. Livestock would carry the heavy loads – tools and supplies on the way up to his camp, butter and cheese on the way down – and every journey was a mission. Today our nephews have motorbikes and they ferry Yeshi’s brother Jamphel up and down, carting hefty packs in both directions.

Mobile phones also help. Last week Jamphel got injured: one of his mules kicked him in the leg and he was worried it was broken. In years gone by it would have taken many days for the message to reach home, but on this occasion he was able to get help immediately.

There’s movement in the wrong direction too, however. When Yeshi was little he could drink from every river and stream in the village. Plastic had not yet made its way into everyday life. There were no disposable bottles or single-use bags. There were no shops. All produce was bagged up using natural materials. Everything the family used was biodegradable or good for upcycylcling.

Today pollution has become a massive problem. Rubbish can be found everywhere. Formal waste management systems have yet to been introduced, and local people remain largely uneducated about the health hazards and environmental impact of toxic waste. We saw our nephew’s son throwing plastic sweet wrappers onto the side of the road. Not to worry, said his dad: once a week everyone in the village goes round and does a tidy-up.

Modern life has brought with it all kinds of rubbish, and this was definitely the downer of the trip.

Here in the UK, we’re heading into Recycle Week, and we want to give our freezer food a shout. We don’t need to – it’s flying out faster than we can fill the shelves at the moment – but what you may not know is that it’s TT’s solution to food waste. The freezer happily houses all our leftover food: we box up all our curries and momos up at the end of each night so we literally throw nothing away. Thank you to everyone who helps us keep this chain in motion. We’re really proud of what we – together – have achieved.

Sunday: 12-3 (lunch) / 5-9pm (dinner)

We’re struggling a bit to keep up with current demand for our freezer food, but we have a good range of curries in at the moment and lots of momos. Chilli oil is also in stock – pop in for yours or click here for online orders.
