Missive From Magdalen Road

Argh! Anyone else out there enjoying the challenge that is opening new walls during a lockdown?

Here’s the thing. We have this fabulous made-new building on Magdalen Road now, which is nearly ready to go. Upstairs boasts arguably some of the most spectacular and well-situated rooms in East Oxford, overlooking on one side the beautiful Rusty Bicycle pub, and on the other Catherine Street’s gorgeous lion mural. Ladies and gentleman we have beautiful exposed brickwork, luxury bathrooms, and some fabulous Tibetan touches.

And then there’s downstairs, the soon-to-be super stylish new home of Taste Tibet, where we will finally be able to serve our momos fresh out of their steamer, and we invite you to pop by and browse our display fridge for the best reheat-at-home party food in town.

But right now we don’t know how to furnish our new rooms or our shop. Will anyone be passing through Oxford for short stays now that Covid Round II is around our corner? Will sipping steaming chai inside warm walls even be permissible once the cold weather hits? We hope so because we have plans for a pay-it-forward scheme that will really benefit our community, and we’re also looking into ways in which we can give over our space to the community in as yet undetermined ways…

Help! Maybe you know someone who might want to let one of our rooms – long-term/short-term/as a yoga space? We’re open to it all. Perhaps you have Covid insights that will make all the difference to how we design the layout of our new shop. Or maybe you’d like to resolve for us the ongoing gas connection issue that fully reduced me to tears at 9am on Monday morning? Oh, and we also need a sign-maker, someone who knows about wifi connections, and a solution to the drainage issue outside our new kitchen please… to name a few. These are certainly challenging times – welcome to a day in the life.

And if you can do none of these things, please just come and support us at our pop up at Silvie or in WALLINGFORD this weekend. Oxford deliveries are not running this Saturday, but we are serving all the good stuff outside Silvie on Thursday and Friday, 5pm-9pm. As for Wallingford, we’ll be back with our St. George’s car park food drop on Saturday at 5pm. Orders need to be placed through the website before 5pm on Friday please – just drop us a line if you have any questions.

And if you’ve read this far, thank you and a freebie! We will be popping an extra momo into your momo box/on your curry this THURSDAY evening outside Silvie. Just quote us the password THU-JE-CHE (“thank you”) to bag yours.
