The Tide Turns

It was a difficult start to the year, but spring has sprung and TT fans will be glad to know that the best possible has happened. In large part, it has happened because of you.

Ladies and gents, Yeshi’s brother Nyima (pictured) – the one-time head of kitchen at his monastery of over 5,000 monks, and much-loved chef at legendary NYC curry houses Sahib and Chote Nawab (reviewed by the New York Times here and here respectively) – is on his way to join us here at Taste Tibet!

Followers of our story will remember that a few months ago we suffered a rejection with Nyima’s initial application. This hit us hard. Many of you got in touch with words of support and encouragement. Caroline Sykes, an immigration caseworker at local law firm Turpin & Miller, spotted our post and reached out to offer assistance.

Words cannot express how grateful we are to Caroline and partner Philip Turpin for helping us to turn Nyima’s application around. The approval of his skilled worker visa now gives Nyima five years with us as a minimum, with the option to apply for indefinite leave to remain at the end of this term.

Yeshi comes from a long line of accomplished cooks – his family are the catering go-to whenever a wedding, funeral or other sizeable event takes place in the village. But Yeshi has always praised Nyima as the best chef of all. Time for the challenge!

More than anything we are just hugely excited for Nyima’s skills, experience and culinary influences to hit our kitchen. And you should be too! Watch this space as we start to put together new menu items inspired by some of Nyima’s signature dishes…

For Yeshi, this is also a life-changing moment. It’s been nearly twenty years since he’s lived in the same country as any family member. His immediate family spans three continents, and pulling off visits can be challenging or impossible. Having his brother here is a massive win for Taste Tibet, but on a personal level – and for our family as a whole – it’s also a long cherished dream.

Thank you so much to Caroline and team at Turpin & Miller, and keep your eyes peeled now! Chef Nyima hits town this week…
